A Tea Doctor in Assam
Assam, 1951. When Dr Bob Irvine and his wife, Lydia, leave post‑war Britain for a remote tea estate in India, they expect heat, monsoons, and medical challenges — not espionage. But from the moment they meet Dan, the enigmatic plantation manager, and his pregnant wife, Katy, the atmosphere shifts. Something is simmering beneath the surface of this quiet colonial outpost.
What begins as a series of unsettling accidents soon darkens into something far more dangerous. Whispers of communist infiltration drift across the tea fields. Rumours of disappearances behind the Iron Curtain reach even this isolated corner of Assam. And when murder strikes, Bob and Lydia realise they have stepped into a deadly game — one whose reach extends far beyond India.

'There have been a lot of books written which document the bravery of the pioneers, who fought for the freedom to follow their truth. This book is more than that. "Stories of the Pioneers" is a journey through the ages of mediumship and psychic practices that exist all over the world, showing the common link that has always existed. It covers the bravery of our pioneers, who wanted the truth of life eternal told, and the researchers, who started out wanting to disprove and discredit the truth but, ultimately, became our biggest supporters. The truth should always be told, and you should be prepared to listen.'

'This is a fascinating book that gives a deeply personal account of grief, loss and the journey of discovery of life beyond this one. It shows the intelligence of Spirit, and how they give evidence of life eternal. It never fails to inspire and humble me, the lengths our loved ones will go to, to bring each of us the hope we need. This books shows the true reason for Mediumship and Spiritualism - and the power of Spirit to heal and illuminate each of us, so that we can help others.'

'What a pleasure to read this book. In an era of celebrity mediumship, it is so refreshing to read about the dedication of a medium, whose only motive was to serve. This is a book that humbles the soul. It takes the reader through the process of a home circle and the dedication of the sitters, as they allow the Spirit World to blend for the trance state. It is a testament to the power of the home circle, where our true mediums built their relationship with that unseen world, learning together, to build an atmosphere of love and trust. This book is a must for those who want to learn the discipline of good mediumship and the beautiful relationship with those who walk with us.'

My parents on board the 'Batory' in October 1951, en route to Assam, India...

My parents are in the middle...

Mum looks out at the tea bushes...

Dad screens the workforces and their families for malaria parasites, looking for clinical symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches and body aches. An enlarged spleen in a child could indicate malaria. Eye examinations also reveal signs of malaria in adults - and iron deficiency...

Mum and Dad having a picnic on the banks of the River Boroi...

Dad does a handstand...

Running away from an elephant...

Dancing at Princes Nightclub in Calcutta...

My father was a medical doctor, spending the final part of his working years in general practice in Kent (England). He did, however, have a very good knowledge of tropical medicine, having lived seven years in Assam, India, caring for the workforces on a number of different tea gardens during the 1950s. But he didn’t just treat his patients, he also researched into different methods of malaria control, documenting his findings in published papers, and commenting on them in a series of letters he wrote to his parents during his time in India.
When Dad died in 2004, Mum presented me with a pile of airmail correspondence, which turned out to be the letters to his parents, written between 1951 and 1958. As I read them, I quickly realised just how valuable they were, not only from a medical perspective, but from a geographic, economic and social one. Mum had never actually read the letters, so when I disclosed the contents to her, she made some very interesting comments. She also drew my attention to a photograph album she had compiled during their time in India, and as I went through it, I realised that not only did Dad’s letters provide an account of a bygone era, the photographs, together with Mum’s added observations and souvenirs, provided me with an additional resource, allowing me to restore a forgotten part of history, and compare it to the present.
The Assam Diaries gives a factual account of these letters.

Caught between loyalty and survival, truth and deception, they must navigate a tightening web of lies before the Cold War claims them as collateral.
A Tea Doctor in Assam blends crime, espionage, and historical drama into a gripping Cold War thriller.
I am a member of the Garnethill Writers' Group, which is run by Dr Cathy McSporran of Glasgow University. I'd like to thank Cathy and the group for all their help.
Furthermore, I'd like to thank CANCER RESEARCH UK for all their research. My mother (photo to left) had breast cancer, and had a mastectomy when aged 80. However, when her other breast developed a malignant tumour, one small pill, taken daily, reduced the size of the tumour, and when she died in 2021, aged 98 years, it was from an unrelated illness.
I also have friends and acquaintances who have recovered from cancer because of the research carried out. Sadly, some have passed away.
It is so important to keep funding the research.
