A Tea Doctor in Assam
Assam, 1951. When Dr Bob Irvine and his wife, Lydia, leave post‑war Britain for a remote tea estate in India, they expect heat, monsoons, and medical challenges — not espionage. But from the moment they meet Dan, the enigmatic plantation manager, and his pregnant wife, Katy, the atmosphere shifts. Something is simmering beneath the surface of this quiet colonial outpost.
What begins as a series of unsettling accidents soon darkens into something far more dangerous. Whispers of communist infiltration drift across the tea fields. Rumours of disappearances behind the Iron Curtain reach even this isolated corner of Assam. And when murder strikes, Bob and Lydia realise they have stepped into a deadly game — one whose reach extends far beyond India.

Dr Allan Scott (1924–2004) served as Principal Medical Officer for Williamson Magor in Assam from 1951 to 1958. His work combined clinical practice with field research, particularly in malaria control, and his findings were published in The Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 1958. His letters from this period offer a rare first‑hand account of medical life on the tea estates during the final years of British India’s presence in the region.
Historical Significance
The diaries and letters provide a unique window into the medical, social, and cultural world of Assam’s tea estates in the 1950s. They document malaria control, monsoon conditions, smallpox scares, labour relations, and the daily realities of life in a remote and challenging environment.
Authenticity Statement
All material in The Assam Diaries is drawn from original letters and documents written by Dr Scott between 1951 and 1958. These papers have been carefully transcribed, edited, and contextualised to preserve their historical accuracy while making them accessible to modern readers.
REVIEWS: The Assam Diaries: Medicine on a Tropical Tea Estate during the 1950s
The Assam Diaries succeeds because it’s more than a memoir. It’s a thoughtful, well‑documented account of a unique place and time, told with warmth, curiosity, and respect. Readers interested in medical history, colonial and post‑colonial India, or simply a beautifully grounded human story will find it richly rewarding.
A heart-warming and fascinating read. I can’t put it down!
This book is a treasure. I feel so privileged to be reading these letters. Such a personal and human account of a fascinating adventure. The wife being interviewed about her memories some 60 years later just adds another layer which gives you goosebumps. A beautiful couple and a heart-warming and raw account of their time in Assam.
A sharp, vivid snapshot of 1950s Assam. Caroline Allana Scott brings the tea estates and their medical challenges to life with crisp detail and real heart. Fast to read, hard to forget.
REVIEWS: Spiritualism
'There have been a lot of books written which document the bravery of the pioneers, who fought for the freedom to follow their truth. This book is more than that. "Stories of the Pioneers" is a journey through the ages of mediumship and psychic practices that exist all over the world, showing the common link that has always existed. It covers the bravery of our pioneers, who wanted the truth of life eternal told, and the researchers, who started out wanting to disprove and discredit the truth but, ultimately, became our biggest supporters. The truth should always be told, and you should be prepared to listen.'
Minister Jackie Wright, President SNU
'This is a fascinating book that gives a deeply personal account of grief, loss and the journey of discovery of life beyond this one. It shows the intelligence of Spirit, and how they give evidence of life eternal. It never fails to inspire and humble me, the lengths our loved ones will go to, to bring each of us the hope we need. This books shows the true reason for Mediumship and Spiritualism - and the power of Spirit to heal and illuminate each of us, so that we can help others.'
Minister Jackie Wright, President SNU
'What a pleasure to read this book. In an era of celebrity mediumship, it is so refreshing to read about the dedication of a medium, whose only motive was to serve. This is a book that humbles the soul. It takes the reader through the process of a home circle and the dedication of the sitters, as they allow the Spirit World to blend for the trance state. It is a testament to the power of the home circle, where our true mediums built their relationship with that unseen world, learning together, to build an atmosphere of love and trust. This book is a must for those who want to learn the discipline of good mediumship and the beautiful relationship with those who walk with us.'
Minister Jackie Wright, President SNU

During my time as President of the Glasgow Association of Spiritualists, I compiled an absent healing list — a list I continue to maintain with care and gratitude.
WHAT IS ABSENT HEALING?
Absent healing is the simple but powerful act of sending positive thoughts, love and healing energy out into the Universe, asking that it be directed to those — human or animal — who need support. It works hand in hand with orthodox medicine, never in place of it. Over the years, many people have asked for healing for cancer, and this has made Cancer Research UK an obvious and heartfelt choice of charity for me.
WHY CANCER RESEARCH UK MATTERS TO ME
I would like to thank Cancer Research UK for their extraordinary work. My mother was affected by cancer in later life. She underwent a mastectomy at 80, and when a malignant tumour developed in her remaining breast, she was prescribed a hormone‑therapy tablet, taken once daily, which reduced the size of the tumour and kept it under control. When she passed away in 2021 at the age of 98, it was from an unrelated illness — a testament to the advances made through cancer research.
Friends and acquaintances of mine have also recovered because of treatments developed through research. Others, sadly, have not. Their stories remind me why continued funding is essential.
KILTWALK
This is why I take part in the annual Glasgow Kiltwalk, raising funds for Cancer Research UK each year. I am proud of the support people have shown, and grateful for every donation that helps keep vital research moving forward.
THANK YOU
Thank you, Cancer Research UK, for your tireless work. And thank you, readers, for your generosity and support. Every contribution helps bring hope, healing, and progress.
